About Manu National Park

Day 1: Cusco – The Andes – Cloud Forest – Pankotsi Lodge

Our adventure begins before dawn, at approximately 3:00 a.m., when our private car picks us up at our hotel in Cusco. As the city sleeps, we leave the highlands behind and begin our journey southeastward into one of Peru’s most extraordinary landscapes.

We climb steadily through the Andes Mountains, passing through remote villages and dramatic mountain scenery. As the altitude changes, so does the landscape. The rugged Andean terrain gradually gives way to the mysterious cloud forest, one of the most biologically rich ecosystems on earth.

Here, the mountains seem to disappear into the clouds. Wisps of mist drift through the valleys and descend over the forest, sometimes enveloping the road and surrounding mountains in a veil of silver-gray cloud. Towering trees are covered with mosses, orchids, bromeliads, and other tropical vegetation, while waterfalls tumble down the steep mountainsides toward the valleys below.

As we travel deeper into the cloud forest, we will make several stops to look for wildlife and birds. The forest is alive with movement and sound, and with patience and a little luck, we may spot woodpeckers, orioles, toucans, and other colorful tropical birds, as well as fascinating wildlife hidden among the dense vegetation.

We will take a short walk through this lush environment and stop for lunch surrounded by the spectacular scenery of the cloud forest.

After lunch, our journey continues downward through the transition from mountains to jungle. We pass through the small jungle communities of Patria and Pilcopata, watching the landscape become increasingly tropical as we descend toward the great rivers of the Amazon basin.

Eventually, we arrive at the Shintuya Native Community, where our private boat will be waiting.

From here, the adventure changes completely. We board our boat and begin a breathtaking three-hour journey down the Alto Madre de Dios River, traveling deep into the wilderness. The river carries us through pristine forest, where the sounds of civilization gradually disappear and the vastness of the Amazon begins to surround us.

By evening, we arrive at Pankotsi Lodge, our home in the heart of this extraordinary wilderness.

After settling in, we will enjoy dinner and our first night beneath the sounds of the jungle.

Day 2: Pankotsi Lodge – Madre de Dios River – Casa Machiguenga

We awaken to the sounds of the Amazon rainforest—the calls of birds, the rustling of leaves, and the mysterious chorus of the jungle beginning its day.

After breakfast, we continue our journey by boat, traveling deeper into the remote wilderness.

For approximately two hours, we follow the river toward the Madre de Dios, eventually reaching the confluence with the Manu River. Here, we turn onto the Manu and enter one of the most remarkable protected wilderness areas in South America.

As we travel along the river, the forest stretches endlessly along both banks. The river becomes our pathway through a world where enormous trees rise above the canopy and wildlife gathers along the shoreline. We will keep our eyes open for monkeys, birds, capybaras, caimans, river turtles, and other wildlife that may appear along the riverbanks.

The Manu region is renowned for its extraordinary bio diversity and its pristine, virtually untouched rainforest. There is a profound sense of isolation here—the feeling of being far from roads, cities, and modern life.

Our journey eventually brings us to Casa Machiguenga, our secluded accommodation within the Manu wilderness.

Here, surrounded by the sounds and sights of the rainforest, we will have time to relax and absorb the remarkable environment around us.

Dinner will be served at the lodge, followed by an evening in the heart of the Amazon.

Day 3: Lake Salvador – Wildlife of the Manu

We begin the day early, when the rainforest is awakening and wildlife is most active.

Our destination is Lake Salvador, a magnificent oxbow lake deep within the Manu wilderness. As we approach the lake, we enter a landscape of extraordinary beauty—still waters reflecting the immense trees of the rainforest, tangled vegetation reaching toward the sky, and the constant sounds of birds and monkeys echoing through the forest.

One of the highlights of our morning will be searching for the giant river otters that inhabit the lake. These remarkable animals are among the Amazon's most fascinating creatures, and we may have the unforgettable experience of watching them swimming, playing, hunting, or feeding along the water's edge.

We will spend approximately two hours exploring and observing wildlife around Lake Salvador. The lake is also home to numerous species of birds, monkeys, and other rainforest creatures.

After our morning exploration, we return to Casa Machiguenga for lunch.

In the afternoon, we venture back into the rainforest on foot, following trails through the dense tropical forest in search of wildlife. Depending on conditions and the animals' movements, we may encounter spider monkeys, woolly monkeys, peccaries, deer, coatis, and many species of birds.

Every walk through the Manu forest is different. The jungle is constantly changing—something may move high in the canopy, a distant monkey may call from the trees, or a colorful bird may suddenly appear through the foliage.

Late in the afternoon, we return to the lodge for a refreshing shower and a delicious dinner.

As night falls, the rainforest comes alive with an entirely different orchestra of sounds, reminding us that we are guests in one of the world's great wildernesses.

Day 4: Casa Machiguenga – Lake Otorongo – Manu River – Pankotsi Lodge

Our final morning in the Manu wilderness gives us additional time to explore this extraordinary ecosystem.

We travel to Lake Otorongo, also known as Jaguar Lake, where we will explore the surrounding tropical forest and walk along trails that lead through the dense vegetation.

A lookout provides a spectacular perspective over the forest and lake, allowing us to appreciate the immense scale of the rainforest. From this vantage point, we can look across the treetops and observe the intricate layers of the tropical forest—a seemingly endless sea of green.

Our exploration continues as we return to the Manu River and begin our journey downstream.

Traveling by boat through the Manu is an adventure in itself. The river provides a unique opportunity to observe wildlife from the water, and we will carefully scan the riverbanks for birds and mammals. With luck, we may even have the extraordinary opportunity to see a jaguar along the riverbank, one of the most elusive and magnificent animals of the Amazon.

We continue toward Boca Manu, where the Manu River meets the Madre de Dios River. From there, we turn onto the Madre de Dios and begin our journey back toward Pankotsi Lodge.

By evening, we arrive at the lodge, where we can enjoy a refreshing shower, relax after our day of exploration, and share dinner while reflecting on the incredible experiences of our journey through Manu.

Day 5: Pankotsi Lodge – Parrot Clay Lick – Cloud Forest – Cusco

Our final morning begins early.

We board our private boat and cross the river to meet the bus that will take us back to Cusco by road; after a one-hour drive, we arrive at the parrot clay lick, where hundreds of parrots gather every morning on a riverbank to consume minerals from the soil.

Leaving the deep Amazon rainforest behind, we make the gradual journey back toward the mountains and return to Cusco.

The return journey offers another opportunity to experience the remarkable transformation of Peru's landscape. As we climb out of the jungle, the dense rainforest gradually gives way to the spectacular cloud forest.

We will stop along the way for lunch and have time to appreciate the dramatic mountain scenery once again. Waterfalls cascade down the steep slopes, clouds drift through the valleys, and lush vegetation clings to the mountainsides.

It is a fitting final glimpse of the extraordinary landscape we have traveled through—from the high Andes, through the mist-shrouded cloud forest, and deep into the Amazon wilderness.

In the afternoon, we continue our ascent toward Cusco.

By evening, we arrive back in the city and are transferred to our hotel, carrying with us memories of five remarkable days spent traveling through some of the most pristine and spectacular wilderness in Peru.

This expedition offers one of the most comprehensive rainforest experiences available within a short timeframe. Within the Reserved Zone, you will have the opportunity to visit Cocha Otorongo and Cocha Salvador—oxbow lakes teeming with diverse wildlife. You will enjoy catamaran rides across these lakes, allowing you to spot various species of birds and monkeys. As you navigate the waters, keep an eye out for giant otters and caimans, the freshwater predators that inhabit the area. Hiking through this nature reserve allows you to experience the true essence of a pristine rainforest and witness incredible biodiversity in its natural habitat. Our expedition also includes a stay in rustic bungalows built by local indigenous people; they will share their ancestral customs with you, offering a chance to learn and enjoy an unforgettable experience alongside the native communities of Manu National Park.
